Conference “The Major Role of the British Empire Forces on D-Day and in the Victory of 1945” June 3, 2026 Conference “The Major Role of the British Empire Forces on D-Day and in the Victory of 1945” – Benoît RondeauWednesday, June 3 at 5:00 PM Multipurpose room – Free and open to all The British Empire forces played a major role on D-Day and in the victory of 1945, yet their contribution is often overlooked in history. In the public imagination, the liberating ally is primarily the American GI, sharing the aura of the victor with the Soviet soldier. The role of the British Empire in achieving victory on all fronts is frequently underestimated. In 1944, the British Army and its dominions were more powerful than ever and committed the best of their combat forces to the decisive operation: Overlord. Benoît Rondeau, former researcher at the Fondation pour la mémoire de la déportation and a teacher of history and geography, is a specialist in the Second World War, particularly the campaigns in North Africa and Normandy. He is the author of around thirty books, including L’Empire britannique en guerre (Perrin) and La préparation du Jour J. L’incroyable aventure (Ouest-France). Share on Twitter Share on Facebook
